Under the patronage of Ranchi University, BIT flourished transforming into the pioneering institute that it is. With this, arose the need to grant it autonomy and in 1986, it was granted the status of a Deemed University.

This institute is located 16 km. from Ranchi amidst 780 acres of lush green plantations and is surrounded by the rivers Jhumar and Subarnrekha . The institute is fully residential providing accomodation to over 1600 under-graduate and post-graduate students and about 500 members of faculty and staff. The institute includes reaserch Building, Laboratories, Lecture Halls, Workshop etc. over an area exceeding 3,50,000 sq. ft. Some of the labs like Flexible Manufacturing Systems(FMS) and Fiber Optic Communication have gained national recognition. The computer lab is equipped with the super computer Param-10000, installed by C_DAC last year.

Every year around 345 students graduate in the discipline of engineering( Computer, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Production, Civil, Polymer), pharmacy and architecture. BIT offers post-graduate courses in MBA, MCA, MIS and ME. BIT has the rare distinction of being among the few colleges benefiting from the campus recruitment every year.

BIT also offers its students various forums in the form of clubs and societies to display their cultural skills mainly Dramatic Society, UNESCO, NAPS, SPIC MACAY, Music Club, BSP, LEO, ROTRACT, HAM, HAC, Photographic Society and AVEC whose efficient co-ordination is the secret of annual festival BITOTSAV. The institute hosts various inter-university tournaments in sports.
